Need help: I'm new to IPTV and curious about a DVR.

by skorpi0wn

I currently use an HDHomerun to capture local channels. However, I feed them through TVHeadend so I can pause TV, record, etc. In order to set this up, I created an m3u stream.

I'm curious if I can do something similar with an IPTV provider? Do any providers give access to an m3u playlist that I can plug into TVHeadend so I can pause, rewind, record, etc? Also, I have about 3 users in the house so I would need an account with 3 streams.

I've done some searching on here and lots of reading, but I'm not quote sure if this is possible. I guess I could give it a try, but do any IPTV providers that monitor this give a quick free trial to their stream that offers m3u?

Thanks!

We can give you an m3u and we can give 3 connections and you can record.

Hmmm, this is interesting. Im going to steal your setup idea and give this a go too :)

I will say though, if recording shows is what you are after... There are MUCH better ways of getting your shows.

If you use sonarr connected to a Usenet server (or even a private HD torrent tracker with the use of jackett) you can get a pvr like setup that will get whatever quality you want, any show, any network. (Hmm... Think 1080p!)

It will cost you less than any iptv provider here, and will open you u to every single show including shows that don't even air anymore. You also will get much better quality, don't have to worry about buffering issues, channels missing, or commercials!

I bet Usenet access will cost you less than 5 a month...

For what you're trying to accomplish, I say forget iptv.. What you need is a real htpc setup.

The only reason you'd want or need iptv is for news, or potentially sporting events. If you do record news or sports, then maybe you should try your idea here.

I should also point out that with a sonarr setup here at my house, it usually grabs an episode about 20 minutes after the show starts to air in my timezone. So in theory although I'm not watching it "live" but I'll be done watching my show the same time as my friends who are watching live. Thats how fast sonarr can pick up releases.

Last week I had sonarr pick up an arrow episode and drop it on my htpc before the first commercial break...

i'd also like to know the exact same, and I may be in a position to help you try something out . I know of providers that give an M3U ( I am signed up to one currently ) and I have a working, functional TVheadend install, but I have no idea how to plug my m3u file into tvheadend, do you?
