ELI5 IPTV?

by christhebaker

Is there any reference floating around where I can learn more about IPTV? I currently am subscribed with a service and watch via kodi, but I'm lost on a whole bunch of the basics. What are IPTV emulators? EPGs? m3u8's? Magbox's? How do resellers vs providers work? Just a ton of info out there that I can't seem to find in a nice tidy package and I'd really like to learn more about these services.

It's very frustrating looking for IPTV information online because most sites are full of the same marketing speak and hype words that the kodi promoters are using and it's just awful.

resellers vs providers - the people who obtain the tv channels from satellite boxes and cable boxes sell their streams to IPTV providers. The 'originators' of the channels often will not see directly to the public.
IPTV providers will often purchase from multiple originators to put together a package that they sell. Particularly to provide backup if one originator has problems and also to provide channels from multiple countries. Resellers sell the package that the IPTV providers put together using their own branding and their own pricing, it can cheaper than the IPTV provider or more expensive. This is a simplified representation, there are a multitude of variations.

MAG box (such as MAG 254) - a box that provides an experience very close to that from a cable or satellite box. This is all it does but it does it well.

EPG - Electronic Programme Guide. Provides details of the current and future programmes for each channel.

M3U8 or M3U Playlist - plain text files that describe where media files (tv channels/VOD/etc.) are located.

STB Emulator - similar to a MAG box but a software emulation of a cable/satellite box. Again to give you a similar look and feel.

You are where I was 4 weeks ago.. Will will tell you what I did and learned..

  1. I first got a fire stick and Mi box and Kodi.. IPTV dont work well on Kodi so I got the STB Emulator.. The Emulator works ok..

  2. Kodi really better for streaming On demand stuff.. Not IPTV.

  3. I just ordered a Mag 254 box from infomir. From their Website as its the best price I have found..

  4. I plan to use my Mi box for Kodi and my Mag 254 for IPTV only. MAG has full remote and many more features then the emulator.. The MAG is specifically made for IPTV. Fire sticks on Kids TV and works great for Kodi. Oh and I use IPVansih VPN for anything running Kodi.. Been told you dont really need a VPN for IPTV..

  5. I tried several different IPTV sellers.. Went with STARTV as it gave me all the channels I wanted plus the NFL Ticket which I wanted.. I got IPGuys and really like it but it dont Have the NFL Ticket.. And I hear Voodoo is good too and I may try them.. I just get 1 month sub at a time.

So that in a nut shell is what I have done and learned over the last 4+ weeks.

The guys here have pretty much nailed most of your questions.

Just to clear a few things up about Emulators...

An IPTV Emulator, generally refers to a program called STB Emu. This is a modified version or clone of the stock MAG254 software. It's intent is to bring MAG functionality to other android devices

If you own a mag, there is no need for any of this :)

Reseller vs Provider: Providers don't usually sell to the public. A reseller usually buys 100s of months worth of service from the provider in ADVANCE. Then it's up to the reseller to market, and sell accordingly to try to recover the services he pre-paid for

Often people wish to bypass a reseller. While it's possible, usually it's not worth it. For one, depending on the service, you may have to buy 100+ months of service at one time. If that server starts to go bad, slow down etc, then you could waste hundreds if not thousands of dollars. So in a perfect world, a reseller will want to have enough customers to cover those 100+ credits in a very short timeframe, for example, a month...in case service goes south.

You could buy 100 months of service for yourself and save money, but the chances are over the period of 10 years the service will be gone haha

I too need some of this info... Most sites related to this are pure trash and impossible to get clear info from.

Don't want to start a new thread on this so...

What features does a dedicated IPTV box have that kodi doesn't?

EDIT: Found some info: https://www.reddit.com/r/IPTV/comments/5j7uh8/i_would_like_to_have_proper_explanation_on_why/
