How much can be the server costs to provide HD IPTV channels for 10,000 customers?

by titooo7

I don't know anything about how an iptv service is setup m, but I'm really curious about the server and bandwith costs to provide this kind of service to so many people.

This weekend one Spanish iptv provider posted an m3u8 playlist with limit to 10,000 users as Xmas gift (valid during 48 hours only).

Considering that most of the channels were HD, he posted it in the biggest Spanish forum & that he already had some customerst I think that probably more than 5000 people were using his service this weekend..... and with 0 buffering!

I have couple of websites and I know that good dedicated servers and bandwith can be pretty expensive, so I'm just curious. How much does someone need to spend on servers?

Most use OVH or Online.net. They offer 1gbit/s bandwidth (unlmited) at quite cheap rates. OVH probably will cost 100-200 usd / month for a server, and you will beed several of them for that amount of people. Online.net is even cheaper… still though, 5000 / 10000 people onlIne is going to cost maybe a couple of thauad usd/month.

Buying 48 hours of server capacity from Amazon and the associated bandwidth would probably not be that expensive. Running it for a year would be a lot more expensive.

How many channels? Like between how many and how many, if you don't know exactly?

probably 2Mb*6*duration-in-minutes*number-of-users

This assumes a 10 second .ts file which is roughly 2Mb on medium quality stream over a 90 minute period mulitplied by 5000 users.

so probably 5.4 terabytes or so for a 90 minute event. This of course varies on quality level. Higher quality (ie: 4k/60fps) will be much more.
