I'm in the UK, looking to watch the free to air channels, but without satellite dish or roof aerial. I do have a very decent broadband connection, though.
Could anyone recommend what would be the best combination of IPTV box and service for my purposes?

UK channels (and a good selection of them) are provided by most of the known services so you're in luck. Check out the sticky about the collaborated list of IPTV providers. Go through the channel lists to see if they have the specific channels you're interested in.
As for the box, go for the mag, dreamlink or avov for the closest cable subscription experience. Other android boxes, kodi, emulators, smart tv's, etc. can also be used but you might not have a good experience or they might not work (basically there is no guarantee like there usually is with the other 3).
I doubt there is a specific combination of box/provider that can definitively said to be ideal. People using vastly different boxes/providers could have their purposes served equally as well.
If you have access to the channels from your location, you'll get WAY better quality with a 30 dollar antenna. Depending where you're located, some wont even need to be put on the roof and can just be used indoors.
You won't find many free ones on here, and will cost you a minimal amount of money. Many UK users use iptv express as their provider, and as /u/-friend- mentioned there are some great boxes out there.
Consider checking out the sticky over at /r/iptvgta for some video reviews of the different boxes. This will hands down, get you the best experience.
There are other ways of using emulators and kodi, but you will not get the same experience and in some cases would be lucky to get a half working EPG. Lots of info on that around as well :)

A nowTV box sideloaded with filmon, will get you freeview for about £15 ,you won't need to subscribe to anything.. or use kodi on your PC, TV etc.
