Raspberry Pi iptv setup?

by leapster1

Aside from using Kodi, is there another way to watch IPTV on a Raspberry Pi?

I've come across a few people trying to get it to work with the pi and it didn't work out well for them.

That was of course using the mag emulator. But, in the pi's defense, many high powered boxes such as the nvidia shield also has jittery video playback.

If it's IPTV you want, get a proper device. You can pick up a mag 254 for probably less than the pi3. One you figure that you need storage and stuff for your pi, you've instantly spent more money on the pi then you could have with a real STB..

I've wondered this also. Raspberry Pi 3 is as powerful as these dedicated STB's. I don't know of anyone who as made builds for Raspberry pi though. Would be a good project.

I have been thinking about getting myself a Raspberry pi to have as a media player myself and use IPTV on it. What would be the issue in using IPTV with kodi?

Why aside from kodi? Kodi is very good for watching IPTV on a Raspberry Pi 2/3. It is a little slow between channels, but what do you expect.

I'm using a Rasberry PI 3 with Kodi installed, and it is working pretty well for me, except maybe a hardly noticeable jitter when going through the UI (using Kodi Krypton) while an HD video is playing at the same time.

You just need to do two things:

  1. Buy a class 10 SDCard so that caching and installing plugins works faster.
  2. The most important thing, is to buy the license for the MPEG decoder , so that the decoding happens in the hardware layer instead of the CPU, doing this step increased the performance significantly for me.
