I've spent quite some time reviewing Android TV, "cheap" Android TV boxes and now I'm turning my attention to IPTV set-top boxes.
In summary, I've found an IPTV subscription that recommends the usage of a MAG 250 set-top box. It also details how to configure this box once you've subscription purchased.
I've a few basic questions:

Is there typically a difference between the capabilities of such IPTV set-top boxes? Am I tied into a particular vendor?

I'm aware you can get Kodi plug-ins for IPTV, but I'm guessing installing Kodi on such a set-top box is out of the question?

Lastly, how likely is it that it would be possible to configure this IPTV stream via Kodi on an Android device?

A MAG 250 may be getting long in the tooth. Most people have moved to Mag 254 and some to 256 or to. Dreamlink T1 or Avov A MAG 250 is still very much usable but may be a bit slower then the newer generation.
As for provider, you can choose who ever you want. You want to based your decision on what languages and content )sports or entertainmern) you want. There are providers that cater to many languages and there are some that is a bit focused. It is a personal preference.
Kodi integration is now becoming a requirement for many and you can find provider that will do it. These are the iptv providers that has gone beyond the stalkers servicies.
