Mag 254 VS Mag 256

Is the mag 256 still a bad IPTV STB? /u/stokedrcf (Who's knowledge of IPTV is second to none for me around here) has always advised to avoid the 256 due to severe problems with it.
However these days I see more people around here buying a 256 box and saying they are very happy with it since the firmware was upgraded. It seems to have much better specs than the 254 and I reckon an upgrade in specs would obviously allow faster channel changing and slightly more future proofing.

TL;DR Anyone hear have any ideas if the mag 256 is the better of the two boxes?

A mag256 is a big upgrade from a 254. It will do HEVC decoding in hardware, so it's a great choice. As long as the provider you are using has upgraded their stalker software, you will have no problems with it.

Just to be clear, I didn't really put down the 256. I simply said that my dealer can't keep a 254 in stock, and any he's had a lot of returns on the 256s. He's been trying to sell them off cheap just to get his money back :/

He sells a couple hundred boxes a month in general, so I usually go on his advice :)

At this point you're not buying into technology for the future anyways, not at the 90 dollar Mark...

You're buying a cable box. I say buy what you can get cheapest :) the t1 plus is better anyways :)

I too have seen the happy customers posting on here. So that kinda throws me for a loop too. Tempting to try one!

But I do believe informir has a new box coming soon, making the 256 outdated too

Go with Mag 256w2

Mag 254 has less Ram and the processor is not faster than Mag 256. Same goes to the Linux version used so performance will be slightly better than the 254.

Just got a Mag 256 as an IPTV box and it's great.

My dad got a mag 256 and has no problems with it on privateserver. I don't know if channel quality will be different since that is more of the provider end but maybe channel changing could be faster.

Using Kodi on a Intel NUC in my livingroom in combination with FABIPTV for my IPTV pleasure and Plex for my movie/TV Shows. Thinking of getting an MAG device for my bedroom.

Is it possible to watch my own movies / TV Shows on the MAG? Streaming over my LAN.

I have used both the 254 and 256. From experience the 256 is a little faster all round but HEVC is the real selling point for me - That's the future and near present. 256 wasn't great when it originally came out and this has tainted it's reputation a bit but it has improved and is very reliable now.
