I just want reliable IPTV and the possibility to timeshift / record.

Timeshift/Record is server dependent but 1 good thing about Mag256 ( and I think its a good bug ) that it displays via HDMI and AV, unlike Mag254 which can only dipslay 1080-60p via HDMI and AV via NTSC ( lower quality )
The reason this is important is coz with AV, u can connect an external recorder - like I have a Pioneer HDD/DVD Recorder ( not in production anyore but can find on ebay )
many servers do have catchup ( scroll back hrs/day ) but I find that to be hit n miss

I would go for the 256. I have a t1 plus and its too buggy.
