Should I decrease my buffer size on my mag 256 box. Does it help with lag?

I've tried increasing the buffer size settings on my 256W1. Even though you can see the channel loading time increase, I find it has little effect on buffering. In fact for no reason, the loading time returns to normal even though the buffer size hasnt been changed back.
