When I watch wirelessly on an android tablet via the portal, it streams decently. When I use my mag box 256 on ethernet, it's unwatchable. I have a consistent speed of 15mbps.

Seen few recently mention their mag 256 is not playing ball.
Few things to try first above
I have has this issue with an avov box where i was getting slow speeds with 250mbps internet. What resolve the issue was a few factory resets. In my case I think it was a driver or software installation issue. From what I gather, all these boxes are made with cheap hardware and are not the most stable devices. I would advice doing a few factory reset hope for the best.
Consistent speeds of 15mbps is on par with any mags that I have tested. There are quite a few posts on the speeds and 15 is where the mags should be at. There's only one other person that I've seen post here that got numbers significantly higher. Not sure why, but he was one of the lucky ones. I never get that lucky ;p
Anyways, that is very strange if it works great on what I would expect is a wireless tablet, yet you have issues on the mag. Usually it's the other way around.
If all variables in your tests are kept the same except for the devices (meaning same router, same isp, same iptv server, same IP etc) then I'm leaning towards thinking it has to be a mag256 issue.
If I'm being completely honest, we see lots of issues with 256. It never had the same support the 254 had, and while informir has worked hard to try to release 256 updates, lots of people still have issues. But on the flip side, lots of people say their 256 works fine.
My guess, is that the 256 just isn't fully compatible with all providers. The 254 is proven supported. My local dealer has a stock of 256 that he sells cheaper than the 254. He regularly sees customers return the 256 for the 254. I cannot comment on which providers they are using though, as every customer is different.
The issue we are seeing nowadays is thst many providers are using very outdated versions of stalker software. Very few providers update their server software. The main culprit in my opinion are the "out of the box" streaming kits out there such as xtream-codes... In an attempt to make m3u8 playlists available to people, providers have turned to the simple "all-in-one" panel solutions, and these tend to run very very old, dated software.
Im not sure of a solution for you to be honest, but if you do find one please let us know. You're not the first person to run into such issues and any info you have can help.
Could you let us know your provider? Have you contacted them about the issue? Have you even asked them if the 256 is on their supported list of devices?
My post is all speculative of course, so take it with a grain of salt. I'm still trying to get my nvidia shield POS to work properly with stalker servers! :(
