Are there some recommended bluetooth remotes that might work better? They're already invested in 2 firesticks, but I'm thinking they might need to upgrade to a different box.

If they want a cable-like experience, the best options are a set top box like a MAG or a Dreamlink. Both have full remote functions for EPG and require very little technical know how to work.
I have a Formuler Z7+ (parent company to Dreamlink) and it works great and is easy for my wife and daughter to use. With Vader you also get up to 5 connections so I have a MiBox on another TV running kodi and the APK, as well as a Firestick I take with me when I travel. All work really well but nothing is as simple as the Z7+.
I use Apple TV 4 with iPlayTV. In my opinion this app has the best Guide.

The phone app works well with firestick. May I ask what app you using to watch on firetv ? I have some clients on firesticks with perfect player and stb emu. Remote works just fine. There's also this http://a.co/4FNEroa .
