Looking for hardware to handle Tvheadend server to multiple tv boxes in the house.

by puzzledsam

I want to possibly cut the cord, because cable prices are getting insane. From what I've tried, Vader Streams will most likely be my provider since they offer multiple streams per subscription, which is a must for my family. I am looking for hardware capable of hosting a Tvheadend server, letting me broadcast to other tv boxes around the house, or even phones and tablets. Some people say a Raspberry Pi is sufficient, but I would like to transcode streams and recordings, so they take up less bandwidth and storage. Does anyone know of hardware capable of supporting all of that?

Also, I'm interested in knowing other people's setup, how they handle recording shows, streaming to all tv boxes around the house, etc...

Any help would be appreciated!

I would consider installing a NAS on the LAN and installing simple clients with your IPTV / media software of choice on them. Just have all of the content stored in one place and point all the clients to the NAS. No need to transcode, use a decent gigabit switch and wired clients.

I ran tvh on Synology Nas, rpi 3, and orange pi plus 2. I currently watch on buzz tv. Buzz tv is good, but tvh on pi with kodi was better. Unfortunately no transcoding on ARM. I would recommend old pc on linux o run tvh server or intel nuc. As for remote access, it is as simple are forwarding a port on your router to your lan internal tvh. However, this is not secure. Instead install openvpn server on the same machine (or different) that tvh on and connect all clients this way from remote location.

I use a Minix Neo u1 for streaming. If I don't use it, I can use Kodi or VLC on my PC and at friends.

IPTVGOD

I use and sell vader, i have a family of 4 with 4 tvs and with 1 sub im covered. I have a buzz tv 3000 running its stock iptv software ( thats where i record from) on 1 tv, amazon tv box on another, Android box running kodi on the 3rd and roku on the 4th.

I was paying over $90 a month for cable and with vader its a fraction of the cost.

Get a NAS for recordings, and share it with other devices. No need to transcode, all devices are on same LAN, no bandwidth worrying.
