Does IPTV allow for recording like cable tv PVRs would?

by Who_is_I_today

Thinking about getting this for my folks but they PVR everything.

If it does, what kind of box would I need and is it easy? Easy enough for seniors?

If your folks are dead set on pvring shit, ask yourself how much of a life you want to have, as you will need to be teaching them how to do it, and will have to answer every single god damn fucking call they give you when something doesn't work. Most providers have catch up, which lets you watch stuff you missed during the week, and VOD which carries popular shows and movies. As someone else mentioned, you could go with Kodi, or one of the other boxes that has the function built in, but again it's a learning curve and software and hardware.

Again, how much do you value your freedom?

Not as seamlessly and well integrated, no. Some offer recording but it's really really archaic. The only exception might be if you're running a tv headend server or something like that. The good news is most of the time almost anything you'd want is either on catchup or VOD so it's really only an issue for niche channels/shows.

You can go with the buzztv 3000 or dreamlink t2 or Z7+ boxes. Its all about the box you buy that allows pvr.

Some providers have catch up built in. That allows you to go back a number of days and watch whatever played on that channel. I sell vader and we go back up to 3 days on certain channels.

I can tell u nothing is going to be as easy as a cable provider when it comes to pvr ing.

Yes if you have the right device. I suggest the plex way of watching iptv and recording it works quite nice.

If they PVR everything this is not for them. IPTV is not for morons. BUT most providers have what is called catchup, where you can watch shows that you missed during the week. Quite a few also carry VOD libraries. But if your folks need to be able to PVR shit, and you're the their tech support, ask yourself how much of a life do you want to have, as you're going to be living at their house till they can understand this. How long did their VCR flash 12:00 for?

Prog tv with an m3u works for me. Just gotta have the app open unfortunately

dmau_905

I have the buzzTV box and it's very simple to PVR, has built in storage or can save to an external.

The Android app ProgTV allows Recording & Timer Recording of IPTV, using an m3u file as its source for channels.

The main disadvantage with the app is that you have to leave it running to timer record though.
