PIA - Private Internet Access vs. IPVanish

by Readerthrowaway

I noticed the litany of sales at the moment and I was wondering what folks preferred between the services above (specifically eyepeeteevee users). Please do not solicit. Thanks :)

EDIT: I got a PM with a compelling case for Torguard so also curious what people think about it

IPvanish has handed over customers data to the authorities in the past, thats why some people steer clear ... Of course every company has to comply to a court order, but PIA could not provide the information in a known case, because technically they could just provide the information that the IP in question was used on one of their servers, but could not say what customer used it. Of course for IPTV usage, no court order will ever be written, so it doesnt really matter - but PIA is supposed to give you more privacy.

Both are good, no difference, get the cheapest one you can.

NetCaptive

I like PIA because they support SOCKS proxy. Never used ipvanish so they may too.

Why does this matter? Set your client software to use SOCKS with your PIA credentials and it's an always-on connection, no need for any client to install. (Hint your torrent client probably supports SOCKS).

Another reason I like PIA is the new chrome plugin.

PIA has had a few hiccups since I got my subscription about 6 months ago but it’s been mostly positive. Servers were slow as molasses during the hurricane but slowly got back up to full speed.

I've tried all 3 mentioned, I'm guessing the PM you received was regarding a certain streaming provider?

I think for me PIA is a little faster and a little cheaper than IPVanish but the deciding factor for me was I had trouble with the IPVanish iOS client disconnecting frequently.

In my country PIA doesn't do whole-internet forwarding: not all ports are passed through at my local point of presence so that's a bit of a bummer if you want to connect to certain services that run on non-standard ports.

From my location torguard was definitely the slowest and the most expensive but I know they have other things going in their favor. I'd usually use them just for one specific purpose and IPV / PIA for general usage.

YMMV, it depends on the utilisation / infrastructure at the endpoint you're connecting to and the route between you and the endpoint.

Go with AirVPN.

Out of those 2, PIA

If your on a budget I would also recommend PIA you could also look at vpn.ac they more expensive but they have a decent privacy policy and seem to be reliable.

I like PIA but they really should come out with a dedicated Android TV app.

PIA is better IPVanish is pushed so hard because of the kick backs people get for selling their product.

I have been using IPvanish just for the fact that it works with ANY device that I have. Even Firestick. I'm not sure about PIA, but it can also connect to OpenVPN with ease. I even have this on my phone so I don't even have to download the IPvanish app. IPvanish also has SOCKS proxy server. Like NetCaptive stated, it's great for torrenting. When I did a speedtest, I get about 200-250 Mbps with VPN turned on using UDP. That's also what I'm paying for. One of the greatest upside about IPvanish is that they have one of the fastest servers out there. They also have about 400 servers to choose from.
