Help needed for Linux Atsc server

by zac-fo

Hello I need to make a linux tv server that receive nort american tv chanels on local network using tvheadend/openELEC and I need some tips from knowledgeable people.

At this moment im using this : -Ubuntu 14.04 on a external drive (so I can use it when im away from home on other computers) -Hauppauge WinTV hvr 950Q hybrid stick as a tuner - A handmade antenna that has been tester over the wintv program in windows and works fine

I just finished the installation of Ubuntu and I want to know what to do next.

Anyone already made this? What are your tips? What else do I need to make it work? How other devices will be able to view the content? (Windows, linux, android, ios)

Thanks

Ps: Its for a school project

you should look at https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend/wiki/Documentation so you can figure out how to install it. also https://bintray.com/tvheadend/ubuntu

To watch the channels, you can probably use another deivce, or install kodi with tvheadend PVR.

What is going Ubuntu to do for you? OpenElec is gonna run where? Do what? Run Kodi?

I think you are confused what you want to do, what equipment you need, and whats the end results. All this can be done with a Enigma box with your HVR950 as USB ATSC tuner, and stream it with a real IP or DynDNS anywhere you like to watch from away from home. No Ubuntu, no external hard drives. It's all been invented 20 years ago, you don't need to make home made solution for no reason whatsoever to watch Terrestrial TV.

Man, TVH is very powerful. It took me close to 6 months to figure out how to make it perfect. Ran it on Sunology NAS with similar tuner, on Ubuntu and Armbian. Anyways, use this tutorial I wrote while back: https://reddit.com/r/IPTV/comments/6u46ns/fabiptv_tvheadend_complete_setup/ The concept would apply to your setup. To setup a tuner, check youtube. There is a dude with southern accent has few vids that will get you started.

hmmm not sure what you are trying to achieve. But personally I'd lose the ubuntu and just install either openelec or libreelec (my fav). then install the TV headend service. that should be enough providing your tuner is supported
