Looking for a good OS to use with KODI/Plex.

by jzkhockey

I have an old computer that still runs pretty good. I know that you can have windows open up kodi on start, but was looking for a better solution. Is there any way to get the os from a firestick onto a desktop. This computer will only be used for iptv/plex.

Try Kodi on Linux. It's less demanding than windows. If you're new to Linux try Ubuntu Linux.

Just install libreElec. My bad

Is this for plex server or just the program?

also, what is pretty good? and what are the specs? because if you consider power, noise, heat, general upkeep of it and all that then you are better off with a cheaper android box that can do all you want. If its a server sure, install ubuntu on it, install plex media server and go.

No there isn't any way to get FireOS onto your desktop. As someone else mentioned, installed linux, specifically LibreElec.

You'd get more support if you asked in one of the kodi subs instead of here.

I would recommend remixOS I use it and its great for re purposing systems and boots relatively quickly.

I use OSMC which boots into Kodi. I have purchased from them one of their dedicated devices (Vero 4K) but I believe it runs well on a raspberry pi, so whatever you have should work fine.

EDIT: Upon checking the website, actually it ONLY works with a raspberry pi (or one of their dedicated devices) so probably not the right option for you if you are looking to use your existing hardware. LibreELEC is probably the way to go (which is similar in that it boots into Kodi)

I don't know how you would get this to auto-start, maybe it has the option in settings or you could create some kind of task or script. This is a free Android emulator: http://www.memuplay.com/

Then you can install your Iptv apps, apks, etc. 16gb of ram sounds plenty so apps should run smoothly for you.
