How to tell if buffering is provider or my network?

by davidchance

I'm using the Android app provided by my provider ( a Smarters branded I believe) and sometimes get freezing and buffering.

Not being to familiar with the apps or Android boxes in general, is a blue spinning circle during buffering usually my local network or the provider? Or can it be both?

Download one of the speed test apps and see what your device gets. I get a lot of buffering with anything below 35MB/s, the occasional buffering I still get now at 70MB/s is due to my IPTV provider. So if it turns out your box can only do 10MB/s then it's probably all you.

It's hard to tell if no data about your current internet and device utilization, but if buffering on all channels then most likely problem on your side.

I usually just try using my phone's data connection, if it's also having the same behaviour then its probably safe to assume it's a problem on the providers end.

Could be either.
First things first, try a different app or device. If it’s still an issue, then it's most likely either the the provider or your network and almost never the reseller in the middle.
If the devices are all wireless, reboot your router. Many people do not have routers capable of MIMO(Multiple In Multiple Out) which is very important for this type or use. Otherwise your router is physically only able to communicate with one device in any given second which can cause issues locally when the network is under load.
The better resellers have access to resources that allow them to see what your connection actually looks like. I.e. what speeds your communicating at . They can also compare that to the performance of other users to see what the big picture looks like. If they're honest, and the issue is on their side, then they can quickly identify that and let you know of the issue.
The important takeaway here is that sometimes a single channel is going to have issues(Naturally a part of using IPTV), and there is not much your reseller can do but report the issue. The better(and quite frankly more expensive) services out there generally offer more than one source for a channel. So that in the case that you do have an issue like this, you can switch to the other feed.
Hope this helps!

Power cycle your modem and router and see if that fixes the issue. If it does then it's most likely on your end.

Do speed tests when it buffers like crazy to make sure your Internet connection is getting the proper bandwidth.

If it all fails and your IPTV provider allows it. Try connecting by VPN, I suspect a lot of ISPs are throttling bandwidth on IPTV streaming.

If only a few channels freeze a lot of times the problem is on the server and not on your end

The best way to tell is to have an app like Smarters installed on your phone. When it starts acting up, turn off the wifi on your phone, try the same channel using your LTE network. If its still buffering, its probably a service issue. If its clean, its your network.

Of course, be careful if your provider only allows one stream to play at a time!!
