IPTV Upload Device?

by ThroTC

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but does anyone know of a solution to upload live video to myself? For example, if I have a security camera at home and I want to live stream it to my laptop when I'm away, what device would I need to get that would accept video/audio in and be able to upload a secure stream use like IP/Port? Looking for low latency options. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I think ProgDVB is supposed to be able to do it, I haven't done it as I just use it to watch from directly. http://www.progdvb.com/media_cs.html

" Prog Media Server is a ProgDVB module that allows you to broadcast the information onto your local network or to watch several channels on the same computer simultaneously. "

If you are already able to stream on your local network, you can just use your router and configure port forwarding to access it over the internet. You need to know your public IP address in order to do this.

Most IP cameras, or other streaming devices for that matter, offer a web based streaming interface out of the box. Then it's just a matter of configuring port forwarding to the internal URL of your device.

I wouldn't really recommend poking holes in your router to allow you to connect directly to a camera over the Internet. This is a popular method to use because it's easy, but it's not very secure to allow a device like a security camera to be directly connected to the Internet. Most camera manufacturers don't take security seriously.

I'd suggest setting up a camera on your local network and using a VPN to allow you to connect to your network remotely. Then once you're connected to your home vpn you can browse your camera as if you were local with VLC (once you figure out your camera's URL if it's a network camera) or whatever software your camera came with. The easiest way to setup a vpn is if your home router has a built-in VPN server you can enable and setup.

Otherwise, if familiar with Linux I'd recommend using something like StrongSwan VPN. This let's you connect to your home vpn using an iPhone easily, which is usually all I want to do. StrongSwan is kind of a pain to configure, but once setup works great on my phone.
