Using an IPTV service without a VPN?

I see people talking about a VPN being mandatory but then I see post saying "it's up to personal preference" or "you only need it if you're downloading torrents or streaming the premier league".

I live in the UK and I'm using an IPTV service on an android box to watch entertainment, kids, US tv, and sports channels (I don't watch too many sporting events). I usually watch the premier league matches at someones house so I can avoid watching them all together, I do want to watch the champions league though.

Would I be at risk if I try to do this without a VPN?

If you did get a VPN and it's in one of the 14 Eyes countries the you might as well not have a VPN. EDIT: Spellig

Are these comments legit or just planting a seed of doubt to leave users exposed? All of these services are illegal, why are people trying to make excuses to not use a VPN? The website you get the service from can be as professional as any legal service, but it doesn't make it legal. Your ISP isn't there to back you up when an outside source wants these illegal streams from their content to get shut down and names reported. So why risk it? It's not some charity you're giving money to, it's a way to hide your ass when you're doing this ILLEGAL shit. I've saved $300 since cancelling my cable TV, a VPN for $4/month is nothing compared to my old cable TV bill.
