Got my firestick today and have tried VLC player and the built in one, both work fairly well however some channels have slight jerkiness. Using SmartersIPTV btw, is there anything i can do to stop the jerkiness>?

Smart IPTV I’ve found to be the best/easiest to navigate.
PP for me on firestick smarters on touch devices phone etc
I use zaltv and I think is much better than smart tv
If you can use perfect player with your IPTV service, I've found it to work the quickest on lower end hardware like fire sticks.
I have a rooted first gen fire stick and it may be my favourite IPTV device as I have it set up exactly how I want with custom key remappings (xposed edge pro) and Perfect Player

That "Jerkiness" is usually due to bad buffer timing although it can be due to various reasons.
Using a Stalker Portal based apps is advised. Try STB EMU (as suggested already). You`ll get the playlist in a categorized manner and you`re gonna love the buffering of channels with that "jerkiness" highly reduced. Tried smarters and STBEMU, STBEMU is the best
