Is IPTV the Platonic ideal of internet whining?

by bosiequartet

Those of us who can remember a pre-internet world i.e. pre 1996 or so can sometimes find it amusing how much people get grumpy about in relation to the internet. Back when we had to use Encarta and phonebooks, the idea of Wikipedia and Google would have blown my minds.

Thus, IPTV. Yes, it buffers. Yes, it's unreliable. But the idea that I could have TV channels from Finland, India, the USA, Abu Dhabi, and a dozen or more other countries - in my LIVING ROOM - is still pretty freaking baller. Like, legit guys.

But instead of being astonished by the fact we can watch the freaking Montenegrin soccer league, we get grumpy and agitated because we can't find PSG vs Liverpool in 60fps.

Thus: is IPTV the platonic ideal of internet whinging?

Take this concept and apply it to literally every thing in our lives. Nobody likes hearing about workers in horrible conditions who make less than a minimum wage, but that outrage is nothing compared to a person who doesn't get their amazon prime package on the day it's supposed to be delivered

Welcome to the age of minuscule improvement.

Remember 56k internet? It was amazing. Then we got a taste of faster internet in schools, suddenly 1.5Mbps DSL becomes available, 5Mbps cable, this is fast right? No, there is better, these images and video clips can load faster! 20Mbps internet, what more do we want? Not enough! 50Mbps internet, just for browsing Youtube? 200Mbps internet, I must have it for live streams! 400Mbps internet is available, now remote live stream gaming becomes a thing, and you can live stream a game while you live stream to Twitch while you stream a video tutorial on passing a level, while loading maps on how to get to the next level. This is just technology evolving, if there is no demand then there is no reason to advance. Pictures were nice back in the early days, 800x600 everywhere, maybe something bigger on some scientific website or something. Or you could find a video to watch and make some popcorn in the 3 minutes it took to buffer. We could have stayed back there, but someone always wants more, and here we are today.

I agree with you. A lot of people upset for not understanding how it works or the industry and providers. Providers will go under a blink and you can be with them for a decade. Deal with it.

Love this thread, took me back in time. I remember hearing of a rumor where I could connect two 56k modems together on a computer to achieve faster speeds. When “You got mail” was an awesome sound to hear because you actually had real email and not spam. We would complain but didn’t have unrealistic expectations and never felt entitled. I think that is where the difference is unfortunately with today’s generation
