Questions about IPTV, best box and the ability to record

by road_hazard

Still learning when it comes to the IPTV universe and had a few questions. (Newbie like questions so be gentle.)

DVR questions:

It seems that the majority of boxes do not allow recording. The Formuler Z7+/8 and XPL3000 seem to be at the top of the list as far as 'best in breed' THAT ALLOW RECORDING. True?

And in order to watch 1 stream and record another, guessing I need to find an IPTV provider that allows multiple connections? I'm fine with paying for extra connections.

EPG questions:

Which of those two boxes above will give me the least headaches when it comes to an EPG? (Or, is there a dark horse box that has an amazing EPG and allows recording that I'm not aware of?

Box questions:

Looking for a box that has an excellent EPG, great DVR functionality and great support from the vendor. I know a lot of these boxes run Android and have clients for Plex, Netflix, etc but I'm not going to play games on it or do anything other than use it for IPTV and recording shows.

I also need a box that has really good 5Ghz wifi support.

Thanks

A friend has recently purchased a Z8 and is very impressed so far. 50Mbps down on the 5Ghz WiFi band.

The software that’s available only on these Formuler boxes is very highly rated. Someone was posting screenshots the other day on a test unit in this sub.

Z7+/Z8 are excellent boxes and specifically designed for IPTV. I have not used the XPL3000.

For the Z7+ the DVR functionality is basically select the channel and how many minutes to record for and then recording starts. There is no option to schedule a recording to start at a specific time.
Instead of DVR functionality you may want to consider providers who offer 7 day or 14 day catch up recordings for the channels that you normally watch. This gives you access to the recent programs that you missed. This option does not require an additional connection and does not require you to manually set up recordings.

Z8 will likely have the best features of the standard IPTV boxes. MOL2 seems much less glitchy than the MOL on Z7.

If you want to record a stream and watch another, you will likely need an Enigma2 box or get involved with TVHeadend.

With the Formuler boxes can you record with any IPTV service you have? My dad uses Gorilla and showed it to me and seems to work but before I make the jump I need some kind of DVR.
