IPTV on Kodi/OSMC just stops mid stream, can restart, but getting frustrated - Support question

by Birdinhandandbush

I'm using OSMC on my raspberry Pi 2 B+, its 17.3 I think.

When i play a channel from my IPTV provider it sometimes just dies after 10-20 seconds. I click the link and it restarts again, but this can go on for a while. Seems to be less of a problem later in the day, intermittent problems are a pain

I'm wondering, would changing my buffer and cache settings stop this?

I was wondering if this might be some nasty trickery from my cable provider or just a bad setting in kodi.

Thinking you’re working with several variables that are combining to produce this experience. First off, Kodi is probably the least reliable way to run iptv. Secondly, your hardware is slightly outdated and raspberry pi itself was never really suited for iptv. Lastly...it could very well be your iptv hosting causing some of these lag issues. I’d say those three and include home WiFi / router setup and internet provider...and there are your variables. It would be interesting to test another box through apk or perfect player to see if there is any improvement.

Happened on my Shield before. Never could solve it.

Do anything else on Kodi that does it?

Sign up for a trial with Pure or Nord or one of those and see if it makes a difference (and eliminates the possibility of your ISP limiting).

Kodi's cache and temporary files sometimes cause issues; it may be because providers tend to update frequently, due to shifts in how they deliver each channel. I'm not sure what operating system you're using but on Windows 10, clearing out both the windows apps temp folder and the kodi app temp folder then restarting often solves this.

Sometimes, it's a firewall conflict, so if you're running a firewall you may have to provide an exception.

I have received malware from one provider, but I'm not sure which of three it was. I would recommend shutting off auto updates on Kodi and manually checking any files you're told to download with Malwarebytes or equivalent. The one I got was from a service that made you download an M3U from their site rather than connecting directly via IPTVsimpleclient or equivalent, so perhaps look out for that. Even though it didn't manage to connect to the exterior server because of my protection, it did momentarily interrupt streams when the connection failed and windows logged it.

IF your cable provider is monitoring your streams and you aren't behind a VPN to mask what's going where, you might try using Kodi's system setting to limit the amount of bandwith it uses to what you need for 720p, which is usually the absolute best you're getting off IPTV. Something just north of 10 mb/s will leave you plenty of heaedroom.

this is the reason I stopped using kodi .. the iptv simple client just sux ...

when ever you have a glitch or a ping on your net it can drop the channel or make it pause or freeze instead of waiting for the data packet to catch up so you have to hit stop then reload that channel. If it's the iptv server then of course it can't be fixed so find a BETTER provider that has servers nearer to you and do the free test of their iptv and properly test it.

you need atleast 9mbps on speed tests wired connection to watch 1080p full hd live iptv streams.. and standard 720p hd around 6mbps

I have an android box with iptv smarters free app installed on the box and if there is buffering or channel drops it retries and continues playing.

most iptv I have tested that a good connection on your end and using a wired connection only unless you have a good wifi router and have line of sight with it. Wifi sux for watching live ptv 1080 content and slight interference will cause buffering.

Kodi, the worst piece of software ever written, made for local media playing, now forced to play IPTV streams which it wasn't made for.

Any proper IPTV app will be a better bet, now let the kids downvote me :)))
