VPN Use On / Off

by komobu

Looking at getting Nord VPN for use in the States. I have an nvidia shield and will be using it for iptv. What I am curious about is if I need to keep turning the vpn service on and off all the time. I will also be watching iptv on my cell phone so I will use Nord for that also. Can I turn on the nord vpn and just leave it that way? Will it time out/off after a while and I will have to keep checking to make sure its on?

Thanks for any advice

Easier solution - Openvpn for Android.

Install on shield and get the ovpn file on the Nord site. Import the file enter user / pass then on the allowed apps tabs you can choose only certain apps to go through the VPN.

Set the apps you want on the VPN (mine is stb, PP, smarters etc) set to autostart openvpn at boot and your away.

All IPTV apps on the VPN auto connecting and nothing else on it so doesn't interfere with your other apps.

I've tested this with my provider and it works flawlessly.

Unless your ISP is blocking your IPTV provider, no need to use VPN.

Check the app/software for a kill switch, they should have it somewhere in the settings.

Maybe you don't care but read on if you want to know my thoughts on NordVPN.

I just trialed it yesterday to compare with my PrivateInternetAccess I've had for the last few years, NordVPN is shit compared to PIA. I've got a 400/40 line, PIA can give me about 360/36 earlier in the day and 270/35 in the busy afternoon. NordVPN on the other hand can only do 95/15! I was like WTF, they must be dumping money into advertising seeing as this thing is showing up absolutely everywhere. It sounds great on paper, they've got so many features, but in reality it doesn't live up to the hype.

The reason I was wanting it is obfuscation (hide that you're using a VPN) and maybe a dedicated VPN server (very expensive, $70/ month added to your yearly bill), but their obfuscated servers are even slower than the fastest speeds I could get on their regular VPN. Maybe it's just my location, but I've been reading similar reviews.

TLDR; In my experience NordVPN sucks.

I have been rolling without a VPN here in California. No issues. I’m not recording and storing and have been watching VOD a lot.
