difference 25 and 50fps

by howarth4422

I have recently singed up with helix and noticed they have quite a few 50fps channels which I know many people find desirable. However, no matter how much I try and convince myself I really can’t see any difference. Does anyone have any sports/channels they think really benefit from being 50fps and can definitely tell the difference? I even tried the sports news channels thinking the scrolling text would be smoother but looks just the same on both. Also I checked the FPS is correct and not just labelled incorrectly and they are all correct Thanks

If you cant see the difference i dont know what to tell you, Hockey is so choppy at 25 or 30 FPS its near unwatchable. you need a 60FPS(or 50 in your case i guess) stream to enjoy hockey IMO.

The problem is half of the 50fps are not actually 50fps, they are stolen streams that say they are 50fps

Take a look at a horizontally-scrolling news "ticker". Compare CNN @ 60 fps to BBC @ 25 fps. You should be able to tell the difference.

So, you don't watch Sports?

Yes, fps makes a big difference in the quality of the picture. For instance, if a channel is 25 or 30 fps, when transitioning from one video clip to another or even is changing the channels, if you look closely you would see some amount of "ghosting" versus when a channel is being played at 50 or 60fps. Channels at higher fps have better picture quality. If you are the typical TV personnel you wouldn't even notice it.

A bigger driver of picture quality is the bitrate for the channel (which is basically the bandwidth that the channel needs). Generally the higher the bitrate for a stream, the better the quality. As a result, a channel with 25fps but a high bitrate will look better than a 50fps channel with a low bitrate.

It is relatively common for the suppliers of channels to take a 25fps HD source and re-encode it to 50fps or even to UHD. The result is 50fps (or even UHD) which look worse than the original 25fps source.

Good for you .. i never watch Sky uk sports for that reason

Maybe you just have motion interpolation enabled on your tv? That way, your 25fps streams would look like 50/60fps, only with a bit more artefacts.
