Paid IPTV Basically Functioning - Need Help/Advice Maximizing for my Setup

by Stevie_Y_Til_I_Die

Hi all,

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and insight.

Hardware:

  • IPTV service with the cotton candy background :)
  • Nvidia Shield, with WD NAS attached
  • TCL 55" 4k TV (with built in Roku)
  • Denon AVR and 5.1 surround Sound
  • I use Plex client and have my own Plex Server, but, have not splurged on a Plex Pass yet (willing to if it would significantly improve my experience)
  • Macbook Air laptop
  • iPhone

Current:

Macbook Air/iPhone - Not much luck with these devices (my fault though). I downloaded the M3u and M3U Plus files provided by the IPTV provider and played around with them on my macbook air. I was able to open the M3Us in VLC as a proof of concept, but, did not have the main page, guide, etc. I know there are a lot less options for Mac than PC, but, I think I need to invest in some software if I planned on using it on my macbook air often. Any recommendations? The service has a "Web TV Player" link, but, chrome was not able to show any of the video due to an error message. Not even sure where I would start on my iPhone/ios. Provider also provides a "Mag Portal", but, I haven't been able to find out what that means yet.

TV & NVIDIA SHIELD + WD NAS - I have had much more success with this method. After installing the APK, I was able to use my user and pass to login and begin to play around with the homescreen, guide, settings, etc. I'm not sure if there are any recommended changes to the default settings, but, I basically kept most the same.

Questions:

* Do you know if this service supports catchup and if so, how to get that working? Specific information on the APK
is hard to find and sparse. I believe there was a setting that could be changed that had a default value of 0, which
may be related to this, however, I could be completely wrong.

* There is a box on the main screen that is for recordings. When I clicked on the box the next screen said, "no
recordings", as expected. I am not planning on recording, as it seems the service providers are a lot more heavy
handed on people who record rather than stream (even though both aren't pleasant), but, what would be some
recommended ways people have done that. Do they use a separate piece of special hardware or would a hard
drive or NAS , with the right setup be all you need?

* Is there a way to setup, if the IPTV APK needs additional space than the 12GB on the Shield itself, is there a way to
make sure any overflow goes to the NAS or should I reconsider my existing setup?

*What are the best practices for setting up a paid VPN. Is it as simple as subscribing, downloading the VPN
provider's app from the google play store and setting it up. I could be wrong but a VPN will most likely kill speeds
and make 4K content unstreamable, correct? I heard 4K movies need a minimum bandwidth 150-200 mbps
correct?

Thank you again for your time and I look forward to being able to give back to the community as I become more competent.

No idea what the service is, so I can’t answer that

I don’t think recording is an issue but it does use a connection so you wouldn’t be able to watch a different channel while recording unless your service allows multiple connections.

But a hard drive connected or the NAS properly mapped would work just fine.

Is there a way to setup, if the IPTV APK needs additional space than the 12GB on the Shield itself, is there a way to make sure any overflow goes to the NAS or should I reconsider my existing setup?

The APK itself shouldn’t use more than 200MB. Possibly there’s a setting for where the recorded data goes.

Pretty much - most VPN providers either have an app or instructions on how to make the connection via Android.

For 4K streams, a minimum of 25Mbps would be the recommendation.
