Try out tivimate, better than Mayfair in my opinion. To answer your question I am not sure if you can use other services I am leaning towards no it’s strictly for gears.
I use both, originally preferred Mayfair until I tried tivimate, you need a provider that will Ofer m3u though something gears doesn’t.

Kodi and using IPTV Simple Client and it is the best guide experience I've ever had, it looks stunning, and it is highly configurable. The only thing it's missing is last channel to switch back and forth between two channels. Perfect Player has that capability.

I like that it has both the channel timeline style guide and the list style guide. I like how the banner looks at the bottom with the large number and how it shows fanart in the right side on some channels (you can see this when I go to the second CC channel). Also easy to get in and out of the plot info and channel list from watching a channel. Shows last few channels you've watched in TV widget for Kodi. And you can change you're channel up/down to immediately change or require a secondary okay press before it changes while scrolling through the channel banners. If it had prev channel function, it would be perfect.
