Have had a service for 3+ years, became real unstable. Paid a guy on fb to upgrade system. He actually installed a system that doesn't work as well. How do I become more proficient at maintaining my own iptv set up?

Well, that was your first step right there.
Do google searches and watch Youtube videos. Troypoint is pretty good on YT.
It's basically just ask questions and follow instructions.
Don't make any long term commitments and if it seems too good to be true, then it is. GL!
In my opinion there’s two sides to this. First side is the unit you use. Wether it be an android STB, tv app or site. Make sure you understand what it takes to login to the providers portal or stream.
Second is the service, some are ok... Some are bad... others are great. I try to keep my subscriptions to 3’months. That way if the service is bad I can change. I did epic for a long time and recently switched after all of the outages. Now it’s pretty awesome for 25 a month... message me if you want the link and site.
Cheers
Always try to go direct to providers over the resellers if you can as that will help hopefully get a faster response time if you have any issues. Not all resellers are bad but I like to get as close to source as possible.
Also google and research here and wherever you can. I've just joined this world too after using free streaming apps for a while.
You said it all in your title. Especially now. Make time to look things up if you want to get good service. Free trials or 1 month at a time til you find what you like. Google. Troypoint.
