What non-proprietary streaming device do you recommend?

by MrTooToo

I would like to stay away from proprietary services such as Amazon, Apple, Google, etc. I started looking and saw a few TV sticks based on Android. I particularly liked the one that Channel Master has as it is an OTA DVR as well. I am just curious what other non proprietary devices the community recommends.

I run a mini desktop, (high powered) with tvmosaic on it as a server and use an android box, fire tv and an nvidia as clients with tvmosaic client software installed on them. I like it because VPN is setup on the pc server so everything goes through that and it is on a VPN. Also have it set up so if the pc restarts it automatically starts the VPN and then starts tv mosaic once the VPN is connected. I'm using cyber ghost as my VPN and it also shuts down all connections if it detects the internet momentarily going down for some reason so nothing can connect without a VPN.

I feel like you kind of want/need a device from a company that has hardware manufacturing experience, quality control, enough money to throw at proper development and debugging, and warranty/support vs a hokey knockoff of those same devices with one or two unique features

Get a Shield, bootloader unlock it & install the Lineage TV build without gapps. You'll find most those devices running vanilla Android are pieces of shit. Or you could set up a Pi to run an OS based on Kodi.
