I used a raspberry pi for my parents. That way I can SSH and VNC to fix anything. It is not the easiest to setup, but easy for them to use and me to remote admin. It is running Kodi and tvheadend to record

I'm sure some others can be more helpful than I but I used IPTV Extreme Pro and was able to record (on Android) but I suspect there are better options out there as well.

I've also used TV Mosaic on my Synology NAS but its a little bit fiddly - although that could be my NAS drive and not the app itself!

He will need a twin connections line from his supplier regardless of what box he uses, I’m using a formuler z box with a double connection

If you have a provider with an M3U playlist xteve and Plex or Emby will do both Live TV and recording or both assuming you're allowed more than one stream. Xteve takes a bit or work and channel mapping if you use Plex EPG data can be tedious but once it's configured it's solid.

The best I have used so far is the Dreamlink T2/Prime. You can plug in a micro SD card, portable harddrive or use a usb stick .

Try /r/iMPlayer today's update will introduce recording to NAS server also!

He has Gears TV

This is going to be problematic. Gears doesn't play nice with external apps that do recording. They do have 48-hour catchup on most of their channels, however if he isn't going to watch within that timeframe, then you might need to look at another service with M3U that can be used in a traditional player.
