I use Apple tv as well. Agree that all the apps are whack. I think kodi with the IPTV client is the best on Apple TV.
I use FlexIPTV and it works nicely. Workable GUI.
It is sad that most all of them charge. Some providers have an app player, hint hint
However, doesn't OTTplayer work for Apple etc? it is free.

iPlayTV. I’ve tested I guess all of them, and none of them are perfect, they all have their ups and downs. So you are basically looking for the one that sucks the least. And iPlayTV sucks the least.
