British Television slightly higher pitched?

by KalynnCampbell

It’s so slightly different than I never even noticed it at first, but every British channel I’ve ever gotten is just a bit higher pitched than what it should be.

I recorded a short section and ran it through logic against the original video that it SHOULD sound like, and sure enough, it’s clearly higher pitched when comparing it side by side or with the original coming out of one speaker and the streamed/recorded one out of the other.

Didn’t care at first as it’s so slight, but now that I’ve been through three different IPTV providers (Vader’s, Helix, Ok2) and they all have this issue, I’m starting to think SOMETHING is off, but I can’t figure out what...

I haven’t checked the length yet to see if it’s playing faster than the original which could cause the pitch to shift slightly, but as the pitch seems to be the same amount “off” whether it’s a short twenty minute show or long three hour movie, so I don’t think that’s the case. So I think it’s a standard amount.

You don’t notice it for some actor’s voices, but others (especially ones with a higher timbre) just sound mildly squeaky. For example, watching The Fast and the Furious, Vin Diesel’s voice is higher on the UK recording I have, but for all intents and purposes sounds the same, while Paul Walker’s voice sounds like he’s just starting puberty.

I’m stumped. Thought I was just going crazy til I recorded and compared it.

Probably has something to do with PAL in the UK being 50hz and US NTSC standard is 60hz.

Check with whatever player you are using that it is not overriding the frame rate and forcing it to 60fps. I know that's vague, but that would be my first port of call. Most players have an option to retain original resolution & frame rate.

I know some US channels run programs on a higher speed to allow for more commercials and roadblocking.

Traditionally PAL (European standard) is 25fps, while film is shot on 24fps. Even though NTSC is more FPS, something to do with the ratio means that it doesn’t sound any different. UK TV ends up sounding a semitone higher.

Some of my feeds cut out every few minutes and need reloading as there's nothing wrong with the feed itself they're just (from what I can ascertain) eventually filling the frame cache in my client and it's falling over at that point. This may point to feed providers speeding up feed delivery slightly for some reason or another (maybe wrong settings etc).

What hardware etc are you using. Please describe your setup .

Is it the case only with illegal providers or also the legal ones?
