Series Recording

by Bizguy1968

Why is the series recording function so elusive? That would seem to be the missing link between IPTV and a full Cable/Satellite experience. Yet in all of my searching I have yet to see a good equal. Admittedly I am fairly new to the community and only a novice techie, but is there a technical reason ie. coding, programming, etc. as to why this much desired functionally cannot be included in any of the otherwise fantastic apps available?

Thanks for the input. Although I can easily record upcoming shows in many of the apps available, I have not found it easy to set a repeating schedule to regularly record a program. I am using my IPTV providers app as well as Tivimate, IPTV Extreme, and have tried a few others. I also use TVZion, Real Debrid (with sub), TerrariumTV, and Tea TV - all for VOD. Unfortunately these apps frequently lack streams for programs I would like to follow.

You mentioned a few IPTV apps I have not tried. I will check them out. Thanks!

All you need is Android TV and r/pvrlive

You usually get better quality (higher bitrate) with a VOD service that is grabbing the WEB-DLs vs. an IPTV stream from a cable/satellite provider

Unless it's a niche show on a cable network, most every show being broadcast is available outside of IPTV after the broadcast

NextPVR is free, does live tv, TV guide, season recordings etc. Can be used as a PVR backend for Kodi and other clients. It can be installed on Windows, Linux, Mac, or docker (for installing on NAS etc)

For the best VOD experience, check out Plex or Emby. As an example, my Plex share provider has processes setup to grab the latest episodes as soon as they’re available.

Check out /r/plexshares or /r/embyshares for info

Tvheadend does this and does it very well

How is it elusive? Many apps have it built-in (I.e. Smarter, iMplayer, IPTV providers’ native apps). Just connect an external device and off you go. Or, if NAS is supported, through your network. It is just that it is not really that necessary in this environment. You are better off loading apps dedicated to streaming movies and tv shows, such as TV Zion, CinemaHD, Morph, etc and in addition to the latest episodes of shows or the latest movies you literally have every TV show with all their episodes (even old tv shows) and almost every movie ever made at your disposal. If your IPTV has catchup, that is also better than recording, as you can jump back in time 3 days and watch everything (this is good for sporting events it TV show episodes, for example). Recording requires a large storage medium you provide, and is about as obsolete as DVDs and music CDs. Just stream it all.
