5.1 IPTV Audio?

by greg4168

Kind of surprised that most (all?) live TV channels on the IPTV providers I use are still 2.0 stereo audio rather than the 5.1 they're broadcast in. Does anyone know of a service doing 5.1 audio on live tv? Thanks

Simple..it's just not a priority and would be more expensive for the provider (bandwidth cost). Having a large number of channels, highly sought after channels like PPV and Sports packages is. Keeping the channels up and minimizing buffering while trying not to get shutdown by authorities is priority. Keeping expenses down by using as little bandwidth as possible and thus keeping costs down to allow $10-15 subs. A lot of people these days watch on the go with phones or tablets where there is no need for high bit-rate and surround sound. If you prioritize quality, this is not the type of IPTV for you.

It’s too much to ask but I would like to know.

As long as they they don't use high compression for audio, I'm OK. My Yamaha receiver does a great job of simulating surround from a 2.0 source. It's when the use a mono channel...now that terrible!

Actually, I’m looking for the same. I had already a few providers with AC3 audio, but it’s not consistent.

Like Sports Ch 1 -2.0 and Sports Ch 2 -5.1.

It looks more like a mistake when you get AC3 instead of 2.0.

And yes, I check the source. Sat.. Ch. 1 also aired surround sound.

I get the point with Bandwidth and CDN Costs. But adding a Premium Sports Sub. incl. 1080p (high Bitrate and HEVC) and surround sound would be great.

And regarding the Bandwidth, modern Codecs deliver 5.1 Audio thru small pipes already.

E.g.: AC4, HE-AAC v2 (Fraunhofer is doing a great job here.)

But in this case they need more Processing power per Channel to transcode instead of passing the audio.

I also think there are two types of IPTV customers.

A.) get the stuff as cheap as possible / for a decent price to receive the Content they could get legally in there country.

B.) receive content you can’t access legally as you don’t get physically connection (e.g.: watching US TV in EU) And I’m sure they would pay more to get better quality, as IPTV is there main source.

Players Klub when they went by that, did use 5.1 when they did their FHD section early on. Just about all of those were in 5.1. You may find a stray one still here and there on a service but guess those kind went down and suppliers may have stopped since they could possibly buffer more. I would honestly like a provider to have a higher pay level to have 5.1 and I'm sure it'd do good. For those of using Shield or even a computer it'd be great.
