TV license (UK)

by smalikh1

I was just wondering if there's any IPTV channels which don't need a TV license?

For example, not necessarily being streamed live on TV but maybe being hosted from a server onto the Internet? Btw I don't mean Netflix, etc but other channels which stream shows.

Why would you pay for a tv licencex when your illegally streaming iptv anyway 😂 They only know you have tv if you admit it. Call them tell then you want to cancel you only watch dvds, netflix, amazon prime. You dont watch live tv, nor do you use iplayer. Cancelled, job done. Dont ever answer the door to them, dont respond to letter. Licence free...job done. Ive not paid one for years.

I presume you are asking about the UK TV License?

Up until a couple of years ago you could watch channels from outside the UK without the need for a TV License.

These days TV licensing say you need a license to watch any channel no matter where in the world it originates.

My view is its a grey area, the law is vague on the subject and there was no change to the law when TV licensing decided unilaterally that you now needed a TV License to watch foreign channels.

Here is a link to a screen grab I got off Twitter back in 2016

By the way most IPTV providers do a catchup service up to 7 days. You don't need a TV License for that.

Live TV means any programme you watch or record as it’s being shown on TV or live on any online TV service. It’s not just live events like sport, news and music. It covers all programmes on any channel, including soaps, series, documentaries and even movies.

If you’re watching live TV, you need to be covered by a TV Licence:

if you’re watching on TV or on an online TV service for all channels, not just the BBC

if you record a programme and watch it later

if you watch a programme on a delay

to watch or record repeats

to watch or record programmes on +1, +2 and +24 channels

to watch live programmes on Red Button services

even if you already pay for cable, satellite or other TV services
