Beginner merging OTA and IPTV

by komobu

Just picked up a HD Homerun last night.

Now I want to merge my OTA channels with my IPTV channels so I can watch all from the same app. I am also hoping to renumber my channels so I can match my OTAs with their local channel numbers, and move the channels that I watch towards the top of the list.

I am going to get a Plex subscription. I was wondering if my plex app which will record my OTA can also record my iptv. Is that possible?

Any help would really be appreciated... to include links or videos.

live channels along with pvr live app should allow you to use the one interface to watch both your HDHR and iptv, and allow recording etc.

It can be done but not easily. I don't know how much effort you want to put into it. Since you mention Plex, the best option is xTeve. A better option but more work would be TVHeadEnd.

Also, all of this free while the solution mentioned by the other poster is not.

Xteve and Plex is an option and it does work, just a bit finicky. I’d recommend going with Emby and adding your m3u, map the channels, then add your HD HOMERUN. Works flawlessly and all in the same guide. Easiest solution and have never had any issues with performance. It records everything without issue as well.

In general I think Emby kicks the shit out of Plex, but Live TV is the one area where I can say that Emby is objectively better.

honestly, getting some dvr & guide to work for your ota is a lot more important.
that should be your priority, not limiting your gui and iptv choices to one menu.

I had OTA with HDHomerun and xTeve for IPTV, both through Plex. Plex offers guide information from local companies in your area, so I used our previous cable company's channel lineup/guide to merge the OTA and IPTV. All worked OK. Only issue is you are stuck with whatever guide info/channels are available in your area and Plex limits total channels to like 400 or something. I think there is workaround for the guide but I never looked into it - this method was pretty easy.

Yes, I could record IPTV but it got flakey if there was a buffer. In the end I got tired of constantly needing the PC on and it seemed like it would always buffer when the wife was watching her favorite show so I gave up on it.

Once you start looking into xTeve there are a lot of guides out there to help out.

Emby handles live TV and IP tv so much better than Plex. Use iptv-epg for the m3u so you can prune out the VOD and have good guide data.
