Wouldn’t https be more secure + completely remove the need of a vpn? I know there’s people that don’t use vpn at all but given that let’s encrypt is free. Why not use https?

https means more load on server , which IPTV providers avoiding it.
The M3U link is just where the file is stored on the internet. If you look inside the file for each channel there is a corresponding stream URL this may or may not be in HTTP. Think of it as the M3U file is just a container for all the channel links. If your ISP isn't throttling you then a VPN is not required.
Don't sweat it man. There's some useful info in this link.
My ISP shuts down everything IPTV related and nothing else. Cox is really good at that shit. Fuck them. It doesn't matter if it's http or https.
VPN it. You can assign what you want VPN'd depending on the VPN you like.
IPVanish can assign. PIA can assign.
I use Surfshark cause they have a server in Phoenix which is closest to me. You'll see a lot of ads for IPVanish but if you're on a data limit, it's a data hogging bitch.
But yeah... it really doesn't matter if their M3U is secure or not. As long as your shit is.
Hope this helps man.

A lot of players does not support https
i stayed 5 days without iptv service since i typed my portal with https ... Am just used to add the https in all sites i visit ! i even asked for a refund from my sub iptv007 thought there service doesnt work ! after they saw the screenshot they told me how to fix and been with them since 2018 ! i do not think its a risk to use the m3u or portal without SSL
It’s because most providers simply don’t know what they’re doing. Period. A lot of them it’s just plug and play and ask questions when something doesn’t work. They don’t know why they just ran that Linux command they just know “it worked.”
SSL does work with m3u8 if your provider can figure out how to open a secure port, such as 2096 versus the default 2086.
