TiviMate as well as Android Live Channels with PVRLive for recording.
The provider app has always worked for me with no problems. I use the IPTV app on both my Shield and FS 4K. Although, I have used the m3u for an app on my tablet and PC. I also, have the IPTV app on my BlueStacks emulator.

Most UK providers won't provide m3u anymore as its far less secure apparently....
On another note you say about using your own software..... Have you tried iptv extreme?
If it's always better to use the provider app or if they use extreme code the smarters app
I use tivimate for everything. So I wouldn't sub with anyone who wouldn't provide an m3u or xc login.
