Does anything outside the provider affect FPS?

by racingmoose

I've tried a few services where I was expecting more 720P/60FPS sports channels. On the one service, it started that way and now they are all 702i/30FPS which doesn't work at all for sports.

Can FPS be impacted by the box, app, etc?

I'm trying to find a new main service that has 720P/60FPS sports channels. I keep reading that almost all do, but so far I'm not finding that.

Most services these days are offering the main sports channels from the US and UK in at least 720/50 or 60 (depending on region). Some others, like the Canadian TSN/Sportsnet channels, aren't available in anything above 30 fps as the sources just don't exist anymore. Really depends on what you are trying to watch.

As for whether you can do anything to increase it natively...nope. Aside from the smoothing that some TVs, etc, can do (which usually looks terrible), there isn't anything you can do to actually increase the frame rate from your end.

Thanks for the information. I guess the few services I've subbed so far have switched to lower quality streams. They still have some 720P//60FPS channels, but they are few and not showing up with the sports channels anymore.

Any suggestions for another service to try with better streams for sports?

If your box or app is incorrectly configured you could be imposing an artificial cap on FPS. This is not too likely though. Most likely is that the provider lost that precious source and now has a new one with lower quality streams.

I'm mostly concerned about sports because that is where 60fps is almost a necessity. I'm looking at the national sports channels, regional sports, and NHL.
