Recording off of IPTV - failure rates

by kingsphan

I have had a bad experience recording from my IPTV stream. I have tried multiple IPTV service providers and software. Emby, Plex (xteve), IPTV extreme, and a couple others. All seem to have a high failure rate. When I say failure rate Im talking about a show will not be recorded 100%. There have been so many instances when I try to record a hockey game and it ends up failing and I'll only get a proportion of the game recorded.

So my question for the community. is this normal? Im actually going to watch a game via a live stream tomorrow while recording it and see if there's any buffering that may cause a failure.

What is your success rate with your setup? Also what software are you using? I'd really hate to pay YTTV $50 a month JUST to watch hockey games.

I record two sports tv shows every weekday (ESPN Around the Horn and PTI) and 90% of the times they record just fine. The other 10% it still records but there are errors in the stream which cause rewind/FF features not to work properly. I use TVheadEnd to do the recording. I have been doing this for around 3 years.

I use TvHeadend and get about 90-95% success rate and I use it quite alot.

Have you tried using TVMosaic? You’ll load your m3u8 in that app. Then it’ll function as a server. Subsequently you’ll load the front end (ie in Kodi) and you can watch and record at the same time. Or schedule a recording.

Using xteve and plex I have had zero issues other than provider issues and those have been few and far between.

Another option is look for a new IPTV provider who offers a decent catch up service and let them do the recording for you, will save you a lot of hassle if you can

What kind of device are you using?

if you record it counts as two connections i think, one watching one recording?

I heard of a "person" using NextPVR. NextPVR installs on a Windows Machine and Clients can connect via an Android App or Kodi App. He uses a SiliconDust HDHomeRun MutiTuner Receiver (which easily feeds into NextPVR) for his local broadcast channels and an IPTV provider for Cable/Sports channels. For his FireTV Sticks around the house he uses Kodi and the Kodi native NextPVR add-on as the clients. He has used NextPVR for several years with many different services. He has found that the NextPVR (Recording) functionality of NextPVR is top notch. The local channels "never" fail to record in high quality. For the IPTV channels, the quality and reliability of the recording is dependant on the IPTV provider and their guide data (especially the recurring shows/series). He gets around the EPG issues with the IPTV provides by linking the IPTV channels to Guide Data from Schedules Direct. NOT a sales pitch. NextPVR is FREE!

if you're using Windows 10 it has an inbuilt feature that allows you to record whatever is on the screen, video included - works fine for me. But whatever problems the stream has will obviously just be repeated in the recording :)

Just find a provider that supports catch-up, no need to record then unless you want to keep the show/game.

Eventually you'll go to a legit service and you'll wonder why you wasted so much time fussing with this stuff. $50/mo is totally worth it to just turn it on and it work, never buffers, it just works...
