Best box/stick/way to watch IPTV? Something that simulates Sky would be perfect.

by smthompson

Hi all,

I currently use SIPTV on my LG smart telly to watch my M3U playlist.

Is there something Sky-like that I can use to watch it? Preferably with some kind of record feature if possible.

Is this where in need one of them Magbox thingys?

Apologies. Still a bit new to this.

If you want a most sky like interface it's no question an enigma device it's almost identical.

If you want a device to do a range of things (assume you are in the UK) only look at Amazon devices due to the full set of UK TV apps and 4K Netflix.

If you want to overpay for a device and have less official apps then amazon then get a shield or Android TV device.

If you want to throw away money then get a cheap generic Android box. Or if you want 480p Netflix a Z8.

Try a Xiaomi mi box s android box..download the Tivimate app from Google play store (pay for the premium in app version..this will give you the Sky type EPG your looking for). You will now have the ability to record current and future TV programs as well as a 7day catch up feature... https://www.reddit.com/r/TiviMate/comments/fqp2ya/tivimate_255/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share The box itself is about £60-£70..so not overly priced although it has only a small amount of memory you can add a USB drive and expand it that way.

Fairly new to this myself but spent the lockdown doing a bit of homework.

A Firestick would be the easiest, cheapest route to go but only offer streaming. You can record but not without a load of added hassle and buying additional bits of kit.

Mag boxes and Android boxes offer much the same thing but in different ways. Mag's run their own OS meaning you don't get the same range of choices when it comes to player apps etc. Android being more customisable means more choices.

As I found out though also more confusion. A quick search on Amazon turned up a load of identical boxes under different names, different spec listings and a whole load of fake reviews. All seem to be in the £30 to £40 bracket, maybe they're good maybe not but I didn't fancy taking the chance.

In the end I settled for the Formuler z8. Reviews are generally positive, the EPG seems high quality and probably closest to what you'd get with Sky. £125 so not the cheapest and probably overpriced even but for a one off payment and something I know isn't some generic Chinese box that may or may not even work I'll swallow it. Hooked up to an external HDD or usb stick and that's recording sorted.

I use a zgemma H9s for my service flashed with wooshbuild image that has skins to replicate sky gui, not all services will support zgemma so you would need to check with your supplier before you decide to buy anything

Yeah I can never tell which ones are good in that range. There are too many that are too similar.
