I have a hard coded URL app for android from an old provider and was wondering what is involved in changing it to a different URL?
I have an APK editor and can change some images but I'm looking to see if it is as simple as finding the file we're the account details are then altering the URL?

Yes, is super simple. You just need a PC with "decoding/unpack" tool for APKs files. APK are just zip files, but w/o a proper tool you will have "encoded" files.
Then search for the .xml file with that information. Change at will. Repack (re-sign) again and that's all.
Instead of editing the APK you could try hijacking the dns
Don't even need a PC you can do on your phone
