NextPVR vs tvheadend

by ctrl-brk

Has anyone used both and have any comparisons to share?

I'm using tvh now but real tired of how overly complex it is for IPTV, I'm not running a damn broadcast tv station!

Sure, I like scheduling, recording, EPG... But everything else is just in the way constantly.

I'm just using phones, tablets, and Chromecast. Not using Plex. My IPTV is a well known and reliable provider, they include their own EPG as well.

Thoughts?

Nextpvr was pretty buggy when I tried it a couple of years ago. Slow channel changing, plus epg issues.

TVHeadend is the best in class. it is complicated, but nothing comes close to it in how it handles streams.

I tried tvH recently and for the life of me couldnt get the tv guide working well. Random programs in the wrong channels which defeated the object of using as a pvr. I had a look around and seemed a common issue.

Next pvr i use now is mich simpler no errors and can playback using vlc. I running off a 5 year old laptop running linux now.

Having said all that... if you never tried tivimate give that a look- does everything from the front end and is very easy

I'd suggest looking at Emby. It uses a client/server model, can handle multiple sources, has its own EPG, and can also act as a media server like Plex.

I've tried both in my server (but I'm using OTA TV signal not IPTV source). My clients are Kodi.

NextPVR is simple to set up but I had trouble getting timeshifting right. It works flawless for playing recorded shows.

TVH is hard to set up but once set up, it's rock solid. Instant channel switching (like what you expect when changing channels in a TV).
