IPTV right for an older person?

by noogers

Hi Guys/Gals,

I am unsure if this has been answered before but I do not see anything in the first few pages and so i will ask.

My mother needs access to TV and she is not very technical at all .. she has issues even using an Ipad if that tells you anything. Is there any service I can get her that has menus and crap that are easy for her to use? She really only wants Old lady channels like BBC, Gardening, Cooking stations, Sewing, home improvement stuff .. nothing really that needs the latest and greatest movies. just UK and Canadian/US content and mainly the subjects I listed above.

Is there a service?box?whatever .. that would fit the bill? even the though of a menu with multiple options is a daunting task for her. I am thinking box to boot to a guide that is already pre-set with channels she wants.

No. My wife is always pressing some button and accidentally getting into a state she can't get out of. No way this would work well for an old person confused by an iPad.

HeyYouDontYouKnowWho

I have my Mother in a home set up on IPTV I think she grasps it okay because it says UK DOCO, US DOCU, US MOVIE, SPORT ETC and she can go into the genre she prefers and see what she wants I’ve had trouble getting her to use it because I spent a considerable amount of time teaching her about Emby shares and she’s quite taken with UK shows and ghost shows, I also have slowly got her used to Netflix and she’s graduated to a Smart Television, normally these things are intimidating but I found it is about directing the person in how to do something and guiding through each step to build confidence rather resist that urge to pick up and fix mistakes providing the directions patiently for repairing the error to a neutral state like menu button after wrong channel list etc. I think my Mother prefers to watch shows she chooses so sometimes VOD is a great idea, maybe some research on her interest in media if timely and perhaps cater towards those they are usually elaborate if the opportunity arises which the internet gives... anyway that’s my experience. Good luck ...

Formuler is good for an older person, its easy to customize the channel list by using favorites or removing entire categories to simplify the choices. It also records without having to be on, so it works well as a PVR.

That was what I got for my mom and she's similar to yours, she only uses her iPad for e-mail and reading flyers.

If she just wants to watch a few shows, a VoD service might be even easier to setup than IPTV.

Tivimate and you could even set up an external hard drive for her to record stuff to? Might have to spend a bit of time walking through navigating it but i'm sure after an hour she'd be comfortable.

I set my mother up with Tivimate on a firestick. I installed a new launcher and now she has only one choice on the home screen.... Tivimate. Once that's done just turn off any groups that won't get used and then set up favorites.

I think the most user-friendly iptv app is SMART IPTV APP on TV or SMARTERS IPTV if you have a firestick ... I use both apps with my provider streamsflix they are also so helpful and support is gr8

triplebeamz

formuler z8 or alpha and a good provider is all she needs.

works as easy as a box from your local cable provider, easier even..

as long as your sub is paid, it works.. you wont have to mess around with it to keep it working like if you rely on free apps or kodi..

anyone who recommends anything else doesnt mention you will likely have to give it continual support to keep it working and updated.

I suggest using tivimate with the IPTV service you choose. Easy to use guide. Can add favorites that can easily be accessed as well.

Firestick is always an easy to navigate choice. Shoot me a message if you need any help.

Get a Firestick 4K and install https://siptv.app/ with a service from a chosen iptv provider of yours. Simple for older person.

TiviMate on Firestick. Plug the fire stick into the USB on the TV so it powers on/off with the TV. Set TiviMate to “open automatically” when the fire stick is powered on and “automatically play previously watched channel”

This is how I set it up for my wife and she has no issues with navigating and changing channels. Also hide unwanted channels to make it easier

BornAsThePlug

I setup a few firesticks my parents and Tivimate is by far the best setup you’ll get! If you wanna know how to set up DM me

If it's good working service. None of this $5 a month half the channels are garbage stuff. Good streaming service is easy for anyone just have to have the correct support.

What I had with my father (over 80) is a firestick with IPTV Smarters on startup and keep unwanted categories hidden using the parental settings. Also added his favorite channels on the favorite category.

Previously I had a Roku which s simpler to use for the elderly, but needed to change it when IPTV app were removed. Currently Smarters Player is back to Roku, so you might want to take a look to this option. It's interface is "uglier" than Android one, but usable.

I went throught that with my mom,. tried tivimate tried all kinds of stuff. what a nightmare that was..lol I was always on the phone with her, or at her place. in the end I hooked her up to cable, made her a favorites list(12 Channels) with an easy 6 button remote and that's what works best. she just scrolls through the favorite list channels using 1 button. then volume up and down.

Riyzoh

Use the auto startup option in settings so the app will boot up everytime the firestick turns on so she won't have to use the menu to go to the app.

Get a mag box its built for tech dummies

meviman

Get her the Formuler Z7+ very easy to use after setup.

I have found that the Infomir MAG 254 is an excellent device that behaves very much like a cable box. Boots right into the last channel being viewed. You can't accidentally "exit" back to the home page (like a Firestick or Android box). Easy to navigate menu system. Reliable .. can work for days or weeks without needing reboot. Smooth clean and crisp video.

The older people that I know love it.

You need an IPTV provider that authenticates using MAC address. Plenty of them around.

Don't do it, will be nothing but a headache and phone calls every 10 minutes.
