So do many of you use a vpn or is it blown out of proportion? I’ve heard conflicting information that VPN’s are a good idea but some say they are not needed because typically the authorities would not come after users only distributors

With the latest development of UK police forces issuing cease and desist notices to home IP's using iptv streams (atm a basic bullying practice but who knows what the next stage is) I think a VPN is a cheap way to keep peace of mind. (Talking from a UK citizen perspective)
Depends on the country you are in. Most authorities aren't going to bother individual users because it's not worth their time. They'd rather go after the provider. But they can go after individuals, if they really wanted to.
In some countries, it's not the authorities that are the issue, it's the internet providers. I know someone whose internet service was terminated for torrenting.
VPNs are so cheap, it's best just to have one. A VPN does do the job of hiding your activity from your ISP (as long as you get a no logging one). Depending on the company you go with, it might slow down your speeds just a little bit, but usually it makes little difference.
I have expressvpn to turn on automatically when i start the shield tv. Worth the peace of mind.
doesnt hurt if you use a VPN that stays connected. with that said, Nord is trash and not worth it if you ever want to try them.
My IPTV comes from China as far as I can tell so they're unlikely to get raided. Nobody there seems to care about IP.
But I still use a no-logs VPN because it seems to make the streams more stable depending on which city I use. I've got a second VPN that emphasizes getting around streaming blocks like those from Netflix. But I don't use Netflix. I just want my stream to be solid. The second VPN is just a backup if needed.
The streaming device doesn't have my main Google credentials for the Play store. I don't trust that box. And I don't let it on my network. It's on its own guest network, totally isolated.
Here in the US, the providers don't care about which IP your connected to outside of torrents. Torrents will get you a letter or email warning from the provider. They will not spend the resources on unlimited gigabit connections.
And no the GOVERNMENT isn't coming after you at least not here in the US.
Really depends on which country you live in. I live in the UK and always use it.
So many threads about this, do a Search.
Authorites may only go after dealers.. that doesn't mean shitty trademark lawyers won't send users demand for money letters of they ever compromise a server.. check out satscams .
A VPN is often used for privacy. If you care about privacy, $4-5 a month is not an issue.
it has been said that if the cops shut down the site, it's not uncommon for you to get in trouble because of your info being logged on their servers during the take down. Not sure if this is just fear mongering or what though. I don't use one but I also pay for cable TV so I'm technically not stealing some of it.
People only really use the vpn to get around blocked content, so in the UK sly are pretty hardcore at blocking so you need to vpn out to a different country for a lot of providers
If it ain’t blockin you dont worry too much but an extra layer of security never hurts
