Technical differences between side loading Smart TV vs set top box vs Firestick

by soulep

I've searched the sub and found posts discussing preferences , but wondering what the actual differences/limitations are between using a player side loaded directly onto a Smart TV (Smart IPTV, Smarters, Smart STB, etc) vs using an actual set top box or Firestick. I'm guessing it has to do with processing power and wifi connection but I'd rather get some input from the pros. What are the actual differences? Can side loading a Smart TV be as effective as a dedicated STB?

The problem with smart TVs. Is most dont run Android. Samsung uses tizen. Most others use proprietary..

Android boxes are like phones.. you replace them or upgrade every few years to keep with the times. That would be quite costly to keep upgrading your tv to keep it current. Much cheaper to replace a box that costs a fraction of the price.

From my experience the problem with side loading smart tv sometimes the tv can't handle the playlist when it's huge and the app will not load or crush every few minutes which means a lot of pain in the arse for the customer and for the provider or reseller also. I always tell my clients using an android box is better and you even have a lot of options and a lot of free apps unlike paying an app that wouldn't work good enough.

Sideloading a smart tv sounds a bit masochistic. I mean I dont know how anyone could give you a good answer when they all have different ui. Just buy a android tv device.

I've read people having nothing but issues trying to use just a smart TV to view IPTV. I say save yourself the headache and get an actual device. Just like with anything, you get what you pay for. Firesticks are obviously the cheaper option compared to a STB like a Formuler or Dreamlink. If you have the funds, go with a Formuler Z8, you will not be disappointed.
