Where should my VPN point to?

by chezmorris01

Hello All.

Just a general question regarding VPN set ups.

In your collective experience, am I best setting up the VPN to connect:

  • locally to where I live;
  • to where the server of the respective stream is coming from (if known); or
  • to where the TV stream originates (e.g. US TV VPN to US, UK TV VPN to UK)?

All this time I have been connecting locally but it suddenly occurred to me that I might be setting it up wrong.

Thanks for your advice (and yes, I know that some say you don't need a VPN if you don't have to, but I prefer 100% anonimity).

Usually you point it to closest nodes with lowest pings.

Anyone recommend a cheap router, wireless access point (that will be connected via ethernet for full speed) that has 5ghz and VPN support? I've searched high and low and can't find one for a decent price that will give me full speed support (gigabit LAN)

Appreciate the help or info guys

Usually the fastest, closest server to you. But that's not always guaranteed. Best advice is to experiment and find what works best for you.

I live in the UK and some of my providers are restricting access to their service from the UK and also from Italy, Germany, Spain etc. so I had to find a server that works with all my services which was a bit tricky. First I used Netherlands which was working fine until one day it just stopped working with a couple of my providers, then I switched to Luxembourg, same story: first it worked for all, then stopped for one provider. Eventually I set my vpn to Iceland and so far it's working with all my providers, touching wood.

So it's a game of cat and mouse sometimes depending of who your providers are, and one thing I also noticed is that within the same country, some host servers from company A are working but servers from company B in the same country are not working, so it's not just about choosing a country but also a host server. The worst servers in my case were always the ones from M247.

For me I'd just choose the fastest server, unless I needed to get around geolocked content.

If I was you, I would use a ping and traceroute to check myself which is Faster.

However, never ever connect to VPN in same country. Only one countries laws to stop you being caught? No thanks.

Best is if server is in different country, to use a VPN HALF BETWEEN you and the host server. That adds 3 countries into mix and definitely reduces risks.
