Anyone recommend a cheap router, wireless repeater (that will be connected via ethernet for full speed) that has 5ghz and VPN support? I've searched high and low and can't find one for a decent price that will give me full speed support (gigabit LAN)

PIA has a pretty good guide on PFSense, Tomato and DD-WRT, which some routers will let you flash the OS onto them.
I’d probably just recommend a mesh system if you need it for coverage + speed. Most extenders I’ve used have been terrible but the mesh system I’m currently using gives me great coverage and doesn’t slow down my speeds. In terms of vpn, I tend to just install on the devices I’d be using it on
Asus Router with Merlin firmware.
