Every service is different. Some you can only use a smarters app. Some you get an m3u that works with everything. Others are MAC only and you need a special set top box or stbemu.
M3u is the most versatile.
If using a player of your choice is important to you, then you need m3u links. Any other method will limit you on the choice of what player/device can be used.
if you want to use a non hard-coded apk of your choice you're going to need a m3u link or xtreme code url
I've been getting stream links with username and password. Works as well with tivimate.

I guess it depends on which one is the player of your choice....
Most Players that are actively maintained by their developers will support at least m3u and xtream codes.
CosmiDRV for example supports, m3u, xtream codes (username/password) and Stalker Portal (MAC Address)
You can always find the m3u url yourself if your savvy enough to do so.

A lot of services are moving away from offering an m3u link for security reasons. But myself, I will not sub to a service that does not offer m3u.
