Hi all, I read a lot about firestick/box, android TV etc. Has anyone tried the new Chromecast with built in android TV & seen if that is successful?
How does it compare to firestick?

It's basically the same as the firetv 4k stick with the new re-designed AndroidTV UI (so a much cleaner interface). It has access to the Android TV store where you can install Tivimate directly. Basically it is a less powerful Nvidia Shield but it has the same capabilities from an apps prospective. It is hardware limited that it only supports wifi (no ethernet jack) and no USB ports but both of these can be added with the addition of a USB C Hub. Usable internal storage is limited to just 4.4GB so adding a USB thumb drive is just about a must if you want to install lots of apps.
The problem with new chromecast is no reverse and forward button. So there is no way you reverse and forward while using STBEMU. Please correct me if I am wrong or if any other way for this.
Using Emby to cast live tv.
Steps and setup pics of Android TV on the new chromecast will really help this post than just word of mouth
I bought one the day it came out here in Canada. Been using it for Kodi IPTV/PVR (TvHeadend backend) and it works like a charm. Also sideloaded a custom version of Smarters IPTV. Sideloading required a few steps including enabling developer mode, but it worked fine after jumping through the hoops.
So far all streaming has been great and the device responsiveness has been excellent. The remote is great, especially after using Button Remapper to change the Netflix button to run Kodi :)
My only current concern is how well streaming high quality 4K MKVs will perform without an ethernet connection. No problems so far though from what I've tried. I have a Shield too and it's a comparable experience. Highly recommended!
I just got one a week ago and it's way better than the Firestick IMO. I also got a USB-C to Ethernet adapter. Works great!
I just purchased a Chromecast Google TV dongle, and so far so good. It found my Tivimate purchase and allowed me to install.
It is much faster than the FS4K as alternative buy.
Does the remote control the TV as well as the stick?
Yes. It worked like a charm. I also have Kodi on it as well, no builds tho. Seems to really launch and open faster than the firestick. Keep things a minimum and you should be okay.
